A scene showing a meeting of the Society of British Bowmen, a group started up by Sir Foster in 1787, it gained Royal patronage and the Prince of Wales presented a prize each year. The scene shows a lady taking aim at a target, several other women with bows gather around her, women, men, children and their dogs watch from the side-lines.

This Society was first formed in the summer of the year 1789, of whom it may be truly said, both with regard to their dexterity and respectability, that they are inferior to none [Nulli Secundus]. Their shooting uniform is a plain green frock, and velvet cape of the same colour, with uniform buttons, white waistcoat and breeches, round black hat, uniform button and loop, with a white ostrich feather, white stockings, half boots, or black gaiters. The dress uniform depends on the pleasure of the Lady Patroness. The four Medals belonging to the Society to be transferable, and to be shot for at each of the six monthly meetings.—The Gold Medal for the Captain of the Target, to be gained by the most centrical foot during the day.—The large Silver Medal to the Captain of Numbers, for the greatest number of foots in the targets.—The Silver Medal for the second best shot; and the other Silver Medal for the Lieutenant of Numbers, having the second greatest number of shots in the targets. The sum of Four Guineas is given by the Society to be foot for on each target day, and distributed in the following manner; viz. Each arrow, foot within the gold or centre circle of the targets, receive two shillings and sixpence; all arrows in the red or second circle, two shillings ; those hitting the inner white or third circle, one shilling and sixpence; those in the black or fourth circle, one shilling, and those in the outer white or fifth circle, sixpence. The Patron of the Society: Earl Fitz-William. The Patroness, the Countess of Mexborough.

A pair of rare coloured lithographs with the same title and lettering. Each sheet 195 x 280mm, 7½ x 11". 1 sheet with tear entering printed area.
A pair of scenes of target shooting with rifles. In 1831 Charles Random de Berenger, self-styled Baron de Beaufain & Baron de Berenger, turned Cremorne House and grounds into a National Club for athletics, known as the Stadium. Unprofitable, in the 1840s it was changed into a pleasure gardens, with mock tournaments, pony races, banqueting halls, theatre, an American-style bowling saloon, and staged circus acts, balloon ascents and firework displays. It was De Berenger who had instigated the 'Great Stock Exchange Fraud' of 1814, which resulted in Admiral Thomas Cochrane's disgrace, keeping him out of the Royal Navy from 1814-32.

As the well dressed women take aim, they are watched by a large crowd of spectators. In the distance to the left is a tea pavilion, put up by local landowner the Earl of Bradford.

Meeting of the Royal Surrey Bowmen on Epsom Downs.

The Royal Surrey Bowmen were founded on St Georges Day 1790 with H.R.H. The Duke of Clarence as Patron. The club disbanded during the Napoleonic Wars and was reformed in 1937. The original venue for the club was the 'Everglades', Epsom Downs, and the present club is still based in the vicinity. A snake has appeared on all club records, and is thought to have originated because of the adders natural habitat in the Everglades. Cover page to "The Sporting Magazine", 1794.

The Royal Toxophilite Society was established in 1781 by Sir Ashton Lever with a handsome building and ample shooting ground at Regent's Park, London. It was established to represent the two ancient bodies, "The Finsbury Archers" and "The Archers' Company of the honourable Artillery Company".

Archers shoot at the parish butt for the prize, using the arbalest or cross-bow. It was a law that a butt should be erected in every township and the inhabitants were obliged to practise at them on Sundays and holidays, and were liable to fines for omitting to do so. Sir William Wood (1609 - 1691), toxophilite, born in 1609, was for many years marshal of the Finsbury archers, who held their meetings in Finsbury Fields. He was probably knighted by Charles II for his skill in the use of the bow. In 1676 his society or regiment purchased a badge or shield to be worn by their marshal, and the decoration, known as the ‘Catherine of Braganza Shield,’ passed to successive marshals till 1736, when the office was abolished. Subsequently each succeeding captain of the Easter target held it till it passed into the hands of the Royal Toxophilite Society on its formation in 1781. This society also absorbed the few remaining Finsbury archers.
